EPSRC CDT in Sensor Technologies for a Healthy and Sustainable Future

What a fantastic and interesting day!

170 participants joined this year's hybrid Sensors Day on the 12th of October in the Moller Institute in Cambridge to hear about "Sensors in an uncertain world"

The 2022 Sensors Day was quite different: in the first session we had economists, research council and social scientists talking about their perspectives on uncertainties.

Our speakers were:

  • Mauro Guillen, Dean of the Judge Business School
  • Will Gompertz, Portfolio Manager of EPSRC
  • Richard Milne, Deputy Director of the Kavli Centre for Ethics, Science and the Public
  • Cian O'Donovan, Senior Researcher at the Department of Science and Technology Studies, UCL

This session was followed by our fantastic students talks and poster-sessions in the breaks:

  • Team Challenge presentation "Cyanovision": Our 12 MRes students worked 12 weeks on a challenge aiming to build an early-warning sensing device for cyanobacteria in freshwater.
  • 10-minute flash-talks by our PhD students: Jan Heck, Stefany Kissovsky, James Meech, Erika Bondareva, Katie Gibson, Chyi Chung and Greta Musteikyte.

Lastly, we had talks about the latest sensor technologies and discussions around uncertain data and sensor challenges. Our keynote speakers were:

  • Lorena Qendro, Senior Researcher at Nokia Bell Labs
  • Maurizio Bevilacqua, Senior Scientist at the National Physics Laboratory
  • Simon Tilley, SAS Healthcare
  • John Kupiec, Innovation Manager at the Environment Agency

The Sensors CDT wants to thank all speakers, participants, collaborators, supporters, volunteers and in particular our students and EPSRC that participated and helped during the day. We want to thank Zimmer&Peacock, who sponsored this year's student prizes, our collaborators Astra Zeneca and ReachSci for their participation and wonderful exhibition table.

And finally:

Congratulations to Jan Heck and Stefany Kissovsky, who both won the prize for the best student talk, and Nuzli Karam and Sophie Oldroyd for the best posters. Lastly, we want to congratulate Matthew Ellis, Sarah Barron and Francesca van Tartwijk, our winners of the science art competition
