EPSRC CDT in Sensor Technologies for a Healthy and Sustainable Future

Dear student

Welcome to the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Sensor Technologies for a Healthy and Sustainable Future. The Sensor CDT is an ambitious venture for the University of Cambridge and we are excited to embark on this journey together with you.

The vision for our Centre grew out of the recognition that sensor technologies have come to define our lives. From sensing single molecules in living cells, to the sensors used in connected mobile devices - we are using technology everywhere and constantly to mimic or augment our own sophisticated sensors, which Nature has evolved so that we can see, hear, and feel the world around us. Cambridge plays a world-leading role in this field: key discoveries have been made here on the fundamental science behind sensory processes. Novel sensor technology has been invented in Cambridge, which powers the products of global companies. And much of the research going on in University Departments is itself based on the application of sophisticated sensor technologies.

The Sensor CDT encompasses all of this and more, giving you access to all the people, expertise and infrastructure that Cambridge has to offer in the sensor field. We  provide a comprehensive training programme during the first year of studentship, which leads to the Master of Research qualification and where through course work and experimental projects you will begin straightaway to engage in the process of sensor innovation. You will see that the experience here differs fundamentally from that of a traditional, single-discipline PhD as you will work across Departments and perform projects both individually and in teams. You will interact with our industrial partners who constantly push the boundaries of sensor innovation, and learn how to achieve radically new solutions to current and future sensor challenges. Most importantly, you will discover new interests and skills in yourself, and be able to perform a research project that is ‘just right’ for you.

Being part of the Sensor CDT will mean a very busy time ahead, but we hope you will find it extremely rewarding!
